WhatÕs Going On?
Hello, Everyone! Hope you enjoy this last week of deliveries for the 2005 season. I have tallied the total cost for each week as you can see in the table that follows. I find it interesting that I am short on the half shares (total coming to $302.90 as opposed to the $345 cost of the share) but not on the full shares ($526.55 as opposed to the cost of the share at $525). I am sure many have realized that the half share is not truly just ÔhalfÕ of the full share since the cost is not half of the full share. Sometimes I can forget that it seems when dividing the produce. That will be something I will try to take into consideration for next season. For now though, I really want to hear some feedback about what folks want to do about this season close. As folks know I have set the program at 25 weeks of deliveries and we are only going to have 22 weeks of deliveries. I have decided that instead of just making an executive decision about how to handle this, that I would like feedback from you all about how you would like me to handle it so that I can make a decision that is based on the majority. I have already received feedback from about 10 folks on the matter, and all of them have expressed fairly similar opinions that they feel there is actually no need for a financial credit or attention to be paid to the shortened weeks. One member commented that he wouldnÕt even had noticed if I hadnÕt mentioned. Others have commented that they feel that this is what makes a CSA a CSA, that the members share in the risk of the ups and downs of the weather and the season. Another member suggested that in the future I set the number of weeks as Ôsomewhere between 22-25 weeksÕ with her arguement being that since I donÕt know when I will be able to start the program in the srping due to the weather, why should I know when I will be able to stop the program in the fall due to the weather. All that being said, I have also realized recently that all or most of the ten or so members I have heard from recently have been full share members. Could this have something to do with the fact that they have (as the table represents) received their moneyÕs worth for the season? I would like to hear from you. Let me know what you think of the following: Do you think I am way overanalyzing this unnecessarily? Do you feel that you should receive some sort of compensation or credit for the shortened weeks of the program weather you are a full share or a half share? I would like to hear what you think. Please send me an email and let know! I will send out a group email in a week or so with my thoughts on the matter after hearing from all of you.
I will also include in the group email more specific information on the volunteer CSA garlic planting work day in a few weeks. It will most likely be the last weekend in October but I will let folks know for sure. Well, that is all for now. You will all be hearing from me soon. Thanks for taking part this year and supporting my farm and my business. Elise.
